Maghery Country Park

Maghery Country Park provides an oasis of calm in the village of Maghery. Situated on the shores of Lough Neagh, the park covers an area comprising 5km of woodland walks and picnic areas in natural surroundings. This is an excellent area for birdwatching, fishing and walking.

Coney Island

Lying 1km off shore from Maghery Country Park, this island is an exciting destination to be explored. The island has a rich history spanning many centuries, with evidence of human occupation dating back 8000 years BC. One of the most westerly outposts of the Normans during their occupation of Ireland from 12th Century. The island is owned by the National Trust and regular boat trips on the Trostan are available at the weekend from Maghery Country Park.

The Birches link to 'Stonewall' Jackson

Famous American Civil War General Thomas Jonathan 'Stonewall' Jackson's family forebears came from the Birches / Tartaraghhan area of County Armagh, near the shores of Lough Neagh.

Stonewall Jackson's Ulster family links date back to the 17th Century. He grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, had a committed Christian faith and had a distinguished military career from West Point military college to the battle fields in the Civil War. He was tragically killed in action in 1864, aged only 39.

General Jackson got his nickname from a Confederate Army Colleague, who said: 'There stands Jackson like a stone wall'.

A memorial to Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson is erected at the Birches and the 'Stonewall' Jackson Appreciation Society plans to develop the link.
